Sometimes Size Matters

TomTom Via 620

TomTom have just launched a new 6″ car navigation unit packed with features and a big, high-resolution display that will become a must for truck drivers, people with big hands, or whose eyesight means that a the new big clear display will allow them to relax a bit more when they are driving.

It also comes with 12 quarterly GeoSmart map updates and a free map of Australia. Find out more about it on our Facebook page.

TomTom also came up with some interesting research that whilst most Kiwi’s dream of having a tropical island holiday, nearly half of Kiwis (48%) prefer to have their holiday in New Zealand, followed by Australia (21%). The Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Auckland being the hotspot destinations.

Here come the surprises from TomTom Public Relations Manager Asia-Pacific, Valerie Cross from an international survey:

  • New Zealander’s appear to be the least nature-loving holiday-makers in the world with the smallest amount (14%) of respondents saying they go on holiday to commune with nature.
  • A Kiwi’s favourite part of the holiday appears to be shopping with 66% of respondents keen to browse the shops, over options like visiting beaches (58%) and restaurants (54%).
  • New Zealanders are also some of the easily frustrated when they get lost (22%), nearly twice the global average (13%) and only a close second to our Aussie neighbours (24%).

Ms Cross knocked the hammer squarely on the head, (especially for the Kiwi male) noting “It’s a real Kiwi trait not to ask for help when travelling by car.

Of course our GeoSmart maps road data and Points of Interest are continually being updated with everything from beaches and bays, parking and rest areas, public toilets and ATM’s through to every kind of shop, attraction, place to stay and much more. Your nav really is your travel partner, calmly guiding you to your destination so that you can relax and enjoy your stress free trip.

Christchurch Traffic Map

Our AA Traffic team has been flat out updating road closures and incidents in our system for the AA Maps and AA Roadwatch websites as well as car navigation (specified models of Navman, TomTom and Garmin Asus) and subscription alerts nationwide, but have also done a lot of work to provide quality information for the Canterbury area. This includes the Earthquake Cordon Zone. Its well worth bookmarking if you are travelling around the area as where possible, we do also include real time traffic flow.

Whilst we have been told by many people that they have been very impressed with our data quality, we would like to point out:

1.       All Road condition reports for Christchurch is provided to the AA by a number of 3rd parties .

2.       As all of these Agencies in the Christchurch area are inundated with Earthquake recovery, the information we are receiving may not be current.

3.       We are unable to guarantee accurate driving directions for the Christchurch Area as conditions are changing rapidly.

4.       Our advice to all motorists is not to drive in the earthquake affected areas unless absolutely necessary.

5.       Expect significant delays and ensure all precautions are taken to avoid accidents.

AA Tourism Launches XplrNZ utilising GeoSmart Maps and Tools

GeoSmart is delighted to see the launch of an exciting FREE iPhone application called XplrNZ, developed by Dunedin based company i-Visit in conjunction with and for AA Tourism.

GeoSmart has been working with i-Visit since early 2009 and we were very excited with their appreciation of what you can do with a mobile that has GPS and Compass and therefore knows where it is on the map. We were delighted to be able to introduce them to AA Tourism, which has now culminated in the launch of this leading edge solution. Features of XplrNZ include

  • Augmented Reality (camera view)
  • GeoSmart Interactive Maps
  • Location Based Hot Deals
  • Accommodation Search and booking
  • 101 Must Do’s
  • Great Kiwi Road Trips
  • Traveller Reviews

If you have an iPhone, head to the Appstore and download your free copy today. Let us know how you like it. If you have an Android, I understand the Android version is currently in development and planned for release in early 2011.

GeoSmart is of course very focussed on the ability to use location based data in a mobile environment, including having developed map tiles optimised for the smaller display. We of course run the Location Innovation Awards which are designed to encourage Kiwi innovation in the location based space.

If you are interested in developing LBS applications for mobile, contact , sign an NDA if appropriate and lets talk about how we can help. If you want the best maps and data for New Zealand for your mobile (or web based) app, we want to help.
