AA Tourism Launches XplrNZ utilising GeoSmart Maps and Tools

GeoSmart is delighted to see the launch of an exciting FREE iPhone application called XplrNZ, developed by Dunedin based company i-Visit in conjunction with and for AA Tourism.

GeoSmart has been working with i-Visit since early 2009 and we were very excited with their appreciation of what you can do with a mobile that has GPS and Compass and therefore knows where it is on the map. We were delighted to be able to introduce them to AA Tourism, which has now culminated in the launch of this leading edge solution. Features of XplrNZ include

  • Augmented Reality (camera view)
  • GeoSmart Interactive Maps
  • Location Based Hot Deals
  • Accommodation Search and booking
  • 101 Must Do’s
  • Great Kiwi Road Trips
  • Traveller Reviews

If you have an iPhone, head to the Appstore and download your free copy today. Let us know how you like it. If you have an Android, I understand the Android version is currently in development and planned for release in early 2011.

GeoSmart is of course very focussed on the ability to use location based data in a mobile environment, including having developed map tiles optimised for the smaller display. We of course run the Location Innovation Awards which are designed to encourage Kiwi innovation in the location based space.

If you are interested in developing LBS applications for mobile, contact , sign an NDA if appropriate and lets talk about how we can help. If you want the best maps and data for New Zealand for your mobile (or web based) app, we want to help.

Location Innovation Awards Entries to start coming in over the next 2 weeks

It’s not too late to register or enter, but if you are planning to enter the Location innovation Awards, your entry has to reach us by 16 February, a little over 2 weeks away. So far we have 37 entries and we are looking forward to seeing the great ideas that people have come up with about applications they would like to be able to use.

I have just come back from the Location Based Services Forum in Amsterdam and was astounded by the variety of applications being developed in and around Europe, some of which are very exciting and very relevant to New Zealand. I saw some great applications in all the categories in the competition including proximity based marketing, social networking, lbs games and web map widgets.

As you will see on the Awards website, there are lots of great prizes including a trip to the Where 2.0 conference in California in May, only a few months away. So if that sounds like you, check out the website and join in the fun. You don’t have to be able to develop the applicatin, but you do have to be able to think through and document the concepts. Time is running out, so if you have been thinking about it, hurry to the website, register and receive the info pack.

It is free to enter the competition and the only restriction is that you must either be a New Zealand citizen or currently live in New Zealand.

Free map and directions on your New Zealand website

If you have a business, shop, club, church, school, sport venue or any other venue with a web site, we are delighted to offer you a free map to go on your web site. We have created a tool called the AA Maps BizLocator which you can use for free to put a map on yor website.

We launched this over the last few months at the Small Business Expo and the most common question was, “What’s the catch?” So here it is: At least once a year, you need to confirm that your information is up to date because as well as giving you a map on your website, we share your business information with other services:

  • Car Navigation. We supply maps and Points of Interest to 93% (and growing) of the New Zealand car navigation market. By using our service, yor company or location details will be supplied to car navigation product including Navman, TomTom, Siemens VDO, BMW, Ford, Honda, NavNGo, Horizon and many other brands, to help people look for your business by brand, type, name or keyword.
  • Web sites such as AA Maps, Bayleys and Professionals Real Estate and many more that use Points of Interest to add value to their sites.

Ok, so it’s free, but will we charge later? No, the AA Maps BizLocator is a free service and will remain free. The only cost to you may be a very small charge by yor web developer to place the map on your web site.

We have the only full turn restriction web site for New Zealand because we have driven the whole country and can therefore ensure that people can use our driving directions to get from anywhere in New Zealand to your business, by the fastest route and even print the directions on an A4 sheet via the AA Maps web page, so that your customers or associates can take the directions with them in the car.

By providing people with directions to your location for free, you are also playing your part in reducing the carbon footprint by giving them accurate directions and making sure they don’t get lost. It’s amazing how many people you see driving round with a dazed look on their faces and a map ion their hands. Make your business easy to work with and put yourselves on the map with us for free.

Even if you don’t have a website, but have a destination, go to the AA Maps website and LIST FOR FREE because your information will still go into the car navigation and web maps to help people find you.
